August/September 2014

St Thomas’s duly celebrated Ascension Day with a Choral Evensong, with a few people from the Augmented Choir to boost the singing. It was a lovely occasion, the choir sang a Stanford setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, and a simple anthem, ‘King of all ages’ by Paul Isom. In June, we also sang Matins for the first time for some time, with the traditional chants for the psalm and canticles, which some people - though not everyone! - love so much.

The Evening of Praise has come and gone, very happily, and Jean Sowrey has written about this elsewhere. It involved much work in preparing for it, and the regular choir practices have been a little sketchy recently. However, our wonderful choir have continued to enhance the regular services at St Thomas’s. They have sung an anthem during each Communion, including the usual ‘Come, Holy Ghost’ by Attwood for Whit Sunday, and ‘Holy, holy, holy’ by Schubert for Trinity Sunday. We now hope to settle down to more serious work! My thanks to each of them, as always.
