June/July 2014

We had a wonderful time singing Arthur Somervell’s Passion of Christ on Palm Sunday. It was thought that things might calm down a bit after that, but Vittoria has suggested that we should have a Choral Evensong to celebrate Ascension Day on 29th May, and what could one say to that? So there was another appeal to members of the Augmented Choir, and we expect a choir of nearly twenty for the occasion, including some from Kincardine O’Neil, who, led by Owen Jenkins, have been very supportive. We did not want too much preparation this time, so we are singing the same Stanford setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis as that sung in the Choral Festival, described eloquently by Sue below. This means that some of the choir will already know it, and it should not need too much practising.

Shortly we will be thinking about this year’s Evening of Praise on 20th July. This is intended to be a lighter occasion, with lots of hymns for everyone to sing, and less for the choir. But we will probably sing three fairly short anthems to give the congregation a break, there will be Readings, and whatever solos we can persuade people to offer. Suggestions for this are welcome.

Meantime the regular choir continues to attend our Sunday Services faithfully, and to sing an anthem during Communion. My thanks to them as always, there would be no choir without them!
