Fund-raising and the Annual Coffee Morning and Sale

Two helpful guides to church renewal:

  1. look for signs of life and build on those; and
  2. always keep asking ‘why do we do the things we do the way we do them?’

Right now at St Thomas we are realigning our energies with our priorities, and, looking at what it means to ‘be church’ in the 21st century, we long for ways to build our relationships with the community.

In the context of that sort of thinking, the Vestry has decided, not without some sadness, to give the Christmas Coffee Morning and Sale a rest this year. This came up for discussion because those who have organised it so successfully in the past are really clear they need to step away from that task. And, among other things, these days more groups (schools, etc) are having similar Fairs around the same time.

One of the reasons to put so much energy into this event was to increase the profile of the church in the community. Right now, as we look at ways to offer the church itself for use as a community resource, the Vestry also wonders if we might not have other events throughout the year, in the church itself.

It is hard to say goodbye to something with so many rich memories, and so we are simply going to suggest that THIS year, we try a different approach: taking the best of the Christmas Fair, and using those elements to build on some fresh ideas.
